The Megaphonic Thrift / Yuck

I listened to a couple records that got sent to WRMC this week that I probably wouldn’t have ever heard otherwise, but boy howdy am I glad I snagged em. They don’t have too much in common besides both having a youthful energy and both liking to kick up squalls of guitar.

Yuck is a young British group with some serious love for Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr., Built to Spill, Pavement, and other 90s icons. Their self-titled debut has this great pop-punk sort of energy to it; it rocks hard and is still extremely tuneful and catchy most of the time. Here’s one of my favorites, “Operation”.

The Megaphonic Thrift is a Norwegian group formed from a number of artists previously active in other projects…that I’ve never heard of. They’ve got a bit of a Sonic Youth vibe, I’d say, but as with SY, there’s a lot going on in their music. Sorta proggy shoegazey experimental punk / noise rock. With some krautrock drone in there for good measure. Here’s the third track off their debut album (Decay Decoy), “Neus”.
