Microreviews – 7.23.10

Foals – Total Life Forever

Grade: A-

Best Tracks: “This Orient”; “Miami”; “Spanish Sahara”; “Black Gold”; “What Remains”

Comments: Foals have taken the textures and rhythms from post-punk, math-rock, and even dance music, and crafted them into a record that is poppy, melodic, and inviting — even sunny and exotic at times.

Gayngs – Relayted

Grade: B+

Best Tracks: “Cry”; “The Gaudy Side of Town”; “No Sweat”; “The Last Prom on Earth”

Comments: A bunch of midwestern indie folksters went ahead and made an album filled with smooth saxophones, soft-rock electric pianos, and funk rhythm sections.  It’s delightfully cheesy — and the grade would be higher if the middle third were as strong as the first and the last.

Morcheeba – Blood Like Lemonade

Grade: D+

Best Tracks: “Blood Like Lemonade”; “Self Made Man”; “Crimson”

Comments: Easy-listening doesn’t have to be awful.  Sade’s album from earlier this year was exceptionally well put-together and had some actual personality, which this record does not.  These totally undynamic songs are forgotten as soon as they’ve ended.
